In early 1999, the Starman Team began to rough out the epic tale that is now unfolding in the Starman series, and guessed that it would take 23 books to put it into words. Each of those books was summarized in our files, and even their titles were drafted. We estimated that it would take ten years to produce all the books. Undaunted by this mammoth task, when we were ready we launched the Starman series. In February 2000, the very first line of the series was written: “The antimatter drive worked perfectly!!” Joe exulted. “MAN, can this thing move!” (Assault on Mars, page 58). Since those early days, many branches have grown out of the original plan. As the saga got under way new characters emerged, new adventures were outlined, and some facets of the plan rose or declined in importance. Like authors before us, we learned by experience that our characters and storylines had taken on a life of their own. Even as the first books were being written and published, we were sketching plots for several other stories that were becoming vital to the overall storyline. It became clear to us that many details and ramifications of the tale we are telling were taking us in directions we hadn’t foreseen when we launched this project. Once the saga
has been completed, we will take stock of our situation and decide
whether we want to continue writing Starman stories. Some of the
titles we dropped before may be brought back, and new stories that we
have considered may be written. Future stories may tell the tales of
John, Veronica, Caedmon, and Michaela—the children of Richard and Jan
Starlight and the heirs to the Starlight legacy. Future titles may
include books or short stories such as The Stones of Juno, The Key
to Tharsos, and The Pillars of Creation. We may tell tales
of how Starlight Enterprise establishes outposts on Mercury or
harnesses the energy in micro-black holes. Whether these titles are
ever added to the above list remains for the future. |
